Sick Elektrik : Exclusive Interview
Disco Bunny : It's a great pleasure to have you!!! How are you today? Where are you at the moment of reading this interview?
Hey, no worries, thanks for having us! Both feeling pretty good thanks, sun's shining which is rare for the North of England! Sat in the studio at the moment working on a little admin :(
Disco Bunny: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your career for people who don't know so much about you yet?
We are House music DJ's/Producers from Manchester producing and playing right across the board from House, Tech to Techno and Progressive.
Individually there is myself, Jon Verde and Ben O'Connor. We met by chance in our home town quite a few years back. I'd been producing under various names for years, and was running a design company producing the flyers that Ben was having printed for club nights that he was Diking and promoting at the time. We ended up talking about production and both discovered we had a similar passion for house music so decided to get in the studio together and make some tracks. We then started doing gigs together and over time sort of organically formed as a duo and became Sick Elektrik.
Disco Bunny: When was your label born? What did you want to explore with all artists represented? Tell us a bit more how was it born.
The idea for State Records was conceived quite a while ago but it only actually came to fruition in December 2011. We'd been getting frustrated by labels that don't reply to emails within a respectable time and leave artists hanging waiting for a response so we wanted to turn that on its head. We also wanted to sign some up and coming artists as we get sent a lot of tracks anyway, so hopefully we can help them get the recognition they deserve. We are based in Manchester which is, and always has been a hotbed of musical talent and even though not all the artists are from the area, it will help them moving forward with various events and nights we have planned.
Disco Bunny: Nicely done. I'm loving the releases so far. Do you travel often to perform your art?
We mainly play in the UK and haven't traveled far as Djs yet, as it's still early in our career but hopefully that will change soon... Although we have had the opportunity to play in Ibiza quite a bit over the years, Ibiza has the simple attraction that everyone there has a real passion for music and its like home we've been going there for over 10 years. We'd love to get over to America though, we know how big the scene is over there now and its almost happened a few times. Its definitely on our to do list!
Disco Bunny: Your top 5 tunes currently playing in clubs?
Sick Elektrik - Ozzy
Prok, Fitch & Juan Kidd - Placebo
Carl Kennedy Feat Cheyanne - Once Upon A Time
Daniel Rostron - Creeper (Sick Elektrik Remix)
Sonny Wharton & Sick Elektrik - Crash
Disco Bunny: Favourite festival?
I think for me it would be Leeds, even though its not entirely Dance Music, it still has a great vibe and the atmosphere is electric!
House music wise Creamfields, we had one of the best gigs we've ever done there, it was awesome!
Disco Bunny: What are your plans for 2012 and next year in term of releases, events…?
We've got so much coming up its unreal! Currently We've got "Crash" out which we produced with Sonny Wharton and also "Ozzy" out on the legendary Skint Records. We are about to start work on a remix for K Klass too. Thats a real honour for us and just hope we can do it justice. We've loved their stuff for years! We've also been asked to produce our first Sample Pack for Loopmasters and Quantum Loops which will be a good challenge. Plenty of gigs coming up too, starting off with Venus in Manchester on May 5th, joining Sonny Wharton on his Skint Tour.
Disco Bunny: How fun. I would love to join you guys as well, lol. Good luck on that, sounds like it's going to be loads of fun! Do you guys have a Favourite drink & food?
Spanish food, tapas, although we are partial to the odd Nandos!
Disco Bunny: I love tapas! Hmmm, I've heard so much about Nandos, I need to get myself over to the UK and see if it's really all that tasty!. What are you guys into besides music?
When we were both younger there was plenty of things but music does kinda get a grip of you and not leave much free time, although we like skiing, rugby and drinking ;)
Disco Bunny: Where can your fans go to find you guys online?
All of our "networks" can be found through our site which is www.sickelektrik.com. From there you can get to our Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud etc.
