Sonny Wharton : Exclusive Interview

This week, I have the pleasure and present you with an exclusive interview with a fast rising talent, DJ, producer and owner of Whartone Records Sonny Wharton.

“One of the finest new producers around with quite simply, amazing production skills. Labels flying after him, his own super cool club night and, all in all, someone we are going to be hearing about for a very long time to come” – DMC Magazine

Disco Bunny : It's a great pleasure to have you!!! How are you today? Where are you at the moment of reading this interview?

Sonny: Thanks for having me – today I'm great thank you, sat eating my breakfast with my daily espresso and planning a busy day ahead in the studio!!

Disco Bunny: I'm jealous, in need of my daily espresso asap! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your career for people who don't know so much about you yet?

Sonny: Hmm well I'm a DJ & producer from UK and I've got my first break by winning a mix-tape competition in DJMag to play for Renaissance at Amnesia in Ibiza – since then I've been lucky enough to play all over the world! As a producer I've remixed with artists like Fatboy Slim, Utah Saints and Frankie Knuckles and released tracks on labels like Skint, Toolroom, Size and Spinnin' :)

Disco Bunny: Love your latest Utah Saints remix "What Can You Do For Me" as well as your remix of X-Press 2 -  "Smoke Machine." When was your label born?  What did you want to explore with all artists represented? Tell us a bit more how the idea came about…
Sonny: I wanted to run a label for a long time but it all came together towards the end of 2009 when I launched Whartone Records and the idea behind it was to give a platform to up and coming producers that I believe in as well as a home to release some of my own tracks. Its been really nice to see how the guys on board have developed alongside each other since then and it's great to have a real circle of friends amongst the artists involved!

Disco Bunny: It must be an amazing feeling, not all get the chance to have such a blessed experience!  As you have an international career, you travel a lot to perform your art. Do you have a favourite destination and why?

Sonny: I've been really lucky to see some amazing places but for me my favourite has to be Barcelona – I had a residency there for around 18months and fell in love with the city. Some of my best friends live there and its somewhere I always enjoy going back to!

Disco Bunny: Your top 5 tunes currently playing in clubs?

Sonny:
Pirupa – Party Non Stop
DJ Chus & Sonny Wharton – Runnin'
Sick Elektrik – Ozzy
Prok & Fitch Vs Marco Lys – You Need Some
Sonny Wharton – Back Seat Driver

Disco Bunny: Wow, great selection there. I must admit I'm fan of all 5 artists and their work ; ).  Favourite festival?

Sonny: Wickerman Festival in Scotland

Disco Bunny: What are your plans for 2012?

Sonny: I've got some great singles coming up with Skint over the next few months – Sonny Wharton & Joel Edwards 'Keep On' drops next week with an awesome remix from Uto Karem then my collaboration with DJ Chus is due to come out at the end of May which I'm really excited about as he's been one of my favourite producers for years! Ive also got a new solo single coming out on Whartone in a few weeks called 'Back Seat Driver' with a great remix from Robbie Taylor and I'm currently working on singles with K-Klass and X-Press 2. The main focus for me this years is to concentrate on my production and really develop my sound as an artist now – I think its time to step things up another gear!

Disco Bunny: Looking forward to all releases, you work with such talented artists! I feel like you're constantly developing your sound, which is probably why you've come such a long way! Favourite drink &  food?

Sonny: Not sure if I can pick just one – depends who's cooking?! I love most food and I'm generally always eating!

Disco Bunny: Haha! So you're a foodie!!! We can def sort a speacial meal for you then.  What are you into besides music?

Sonny: Don’t get a lot of time outside of music nowadays to be honest but I'm a big fan of snowboarding, skating and mountain biking!

Disco Bunny: Sounds like you love out doors! Where can your fans go to find you online?

Sonny: http://www.sonnywharton.com is the best place for everything and has links to Facebook, soundcloud etc all on there :)

Disco Bunny: Thank you Sonny for taking the time to present us with this exclusive interview! We love your work and are excited for all your upcoming releases. Of course, we would LOVE to have you in NYC, may be playing along DJ Chus soon?! We hope so. Meanwhile, good luck and keep blessing us with your talent. x
