Danny Howard chats to us before joining Chicane at Heaven in London, October 10th 2012.

In 2012, Danny Howard is no stranger to spending his days amongst the elite of Dance music, and October will be no different for the BBC Radio 1 star. As a guest of one of the most influential figures in Dance music, Danny will be making his debut at Heaven alongside the iconic Chicane. The singles and albums that Chicane has released over the last eighteen years have become engraved in the memories of all those who grew up with a love of dance music. As a megastar of the last decade, it is fitting that the new era of superstar DJ will share the stage with him, and Danny Howard is just that. It is a rare opportunity to see Danny in London with such a hectic schedule, making it a certain date for the Dance music enthusiast. We spoke to the BBC Radio 1 host in the run up to the big night.

You’ve had some pretty awesome invitations over the last year, being asked to play with Chicane in the capital of your homeland must be one of the better ones?

It’s been a crazy year in terms of gigs and I’ve been so lucky and privileged to play in some of the world’s most iconic places in the world of Dance Music with Las Vegas & Ibiza being my two favourites. That said, there’s something quite comforting about playing in your own territory, especially to people who know more about me as they do here, rather than on an international scale. Not only that, to be personally asked to support one of Dance Music’s most legendary acts is something that I still can’t quite believe and I’m really looking forward to it.

As a certified Dance music connoisseur yourself, was Chicane an artist that popped up in the Danny Howard party playlists over the years?

Of course! Chicane is responsible for some of the biggest dance tunes of the last twenty years or so. Saltwater & Offshore spring to mind but fast-forward to now and it’s been an honour to work with Chicane this year when I was asked to remix the new ‘One Thousand Suns’ track. A huge summer anthem and collaboration with Dutch superstar Ferry Corsten that’s been getting strong reactions on the dance floor!

Your BBC Radio 1 show is growing every week. Are you excited about the Dance music infrastructure on the station?

Yes and especially my slot! Not in a bias way but simply because I play such a wide range of tracks and genres under the umbrella of ‘Dance Music’ that it appeals to an extensive and broader audience.
One minute I’ll be spinning a commercial ‘Pop’ dance track and then next minute I’ll be playing something more underground as a world exclusive. I also play many different styles… House, Electro, Dubstep, DnB plus loads more all gets covered on the show and that’s the reason I love it so much because it’s always fresh and never boring.

What have been your highlights this summer?

Highlights this summer include the Radio 1 Hackney Weekend because the line up was just phenomenal. I performed alongside, Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Swedish House Mafia, Eric Prydz & David Guetta just to name a few in front of 5000 people! That was an incredible way to really kick off the summer but then I have to say my Ibiza season has to be up there to rival some of the biggest DJs in the world. Playing as a fortnightly resident at one of the island’s busiest nights (Judgement Sundays), performing at the most popular venue this year, Ushuaia in Playa D’en Bossa and then doing my Radio 1 show live from Café Mambo was just surreal.

With the summer now behind us what lies ahead for you into the autumn and winter seasons?

It all comes back to the UK and plenty of trips on the road! I’m of course really looking forward to the Chicane gig, and then I’m back up to Glasgow playing at the legendary Arches club on 20th October alongside Porter Robinson & Cedric Gervais. Those are two dates I really can’t wait for but I’m also going to make the most of being home more by getting in the studio as much as possible because I’m really working hard to get my productions out there.

For people planning to come down to Heaven to see you for the first time, what can they expect from a Danny Howard set?
Plenty of energy & Big Room Progressive Beats with the odd surprise... just to keep it fresh. I really like to play across the boundaries and not be pigeonholed into one particular style. It’s gonna be goooood!
